The Meteorological Department forecasts that the summer of 2567 (2024) will be 1.2 degrees Celsius hotter than usual, and caution is advised regarding heat-related illnesses. Hot weather is conducive to the growth of certain pathogens, especially bacteria that cause foodborne and waterborne diseases.
What are the common summer diseases in Thailand? Let's learn about their causes to understand how to prevent them.
Heatstroke
This condition occurs when the body's temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, potentially causing damage to vital organs. Without prompt and proper treatment, dangerous complications or even death may occur.
Summer skin diseases, such as heat rash, melasma, freckles, and various fungal infections. It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure, apply sunscreen regularly, and use sun protection accessories.
Food poisoning, caused by consuming contaminated food or water, unclean or overnight food that has not been reheated before consumption.
Diarrhea, caused by consuming food or water contaminated with pathogens, bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins, and chemicals.
Typhoid fever, caused by consuming food or water contaminated with typhoid bacteria from the feces or urine of infected individuals or carriers.
Cholera, an infectious disease caused by bacteria. It results from consuming food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria.
Rabies, or hydrophobia, caused by the rabies virus. It is found in all mammals. In Thailand, it is commonly found in dogs and cats, and occasionally in cattle and buffalo. The virus enters through wounds and mucous membranes of the eyes or mouth.
