Cooling Water System and Seawater Flue Gas Desulfurization (Sea Water FGD)
BLCP Power Plant uses approximately 5.34 million cubic meters of seawater per day for both generating units. This seawater is utilized in two main systems: 1. Cooling System and 2. Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) System.
Seawater Intake System
Seawater is pumped through the Intake System at a low velocity of approximately 0.3 m/second to minimize impact on water currents and allow marine life to escape. Two-stage filtration equipment is installed
► Bar Screen for trapping large debris (disposed of together with other waste)
► Travelling Screen to prevent small fish or marine life from entering the system (marine life caught is washed off with water and flows back to the sea through specially designed channels to minimize harm)
Water Quality Control in the Cooling System
Chlorine is added to prevent biofouling from marine organisms, which could reduce the efficiency of the Condenser — chlorine concentration is controlled not to exceed 1.0 mg/L per standard criteria.
When exiting the cooling system, residual chlorine is continuously destroyed through the FGD system and aeration pond.
Water Use in the FGD System
Water from the condenser is sent to the FGD system, which sprays water mist onto flue gas that has been dust-filtered by ESP (Electrostatic Precipitators). The alkalinity of seawater reacts with sulfur dioxide (SO₂), reducing the pH of the water. Approximately 70% of flue gas is captured in this system.
FGD Water Treatment
Seawater with reduced pH from the reaction enters the aeration pond to
► Strip free carbon dioxide
► Increase pH back to near pH 7
► Convert sulfide to sulfate, which helps reduce COD in the wastewater
Wastewater Management
All treated water is combined with the remaining cooling water and discharged through the drainage channel on the southern coast of the project — designed so wastewater temperature does not exceed 40°C, discharged at a velocity of 1.5 m/second for rapid dispersion and reduced environmental impact on the marine environment.
